Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a specialty developed to serve patients with physical disabilities post WWII era. As medicine became better, more was needed for rehabilitation post trauma- Brain and Spinal cord injury, amputations, multiple fractures, longer survival and better control of sequelae from medical illness ie. Strokes, encephalitis, neuropathies, vasculitis, cardiopulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital malformations-deformities and cerebral palsy. PM and R "naturally integrates"many areas of medicine: Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Rheumatology, Neurology, and Psychiatry, as well as the art of physical therapeutics, prosthetics, orthotics, wound care and pain management.
